Random This & That

I don’t have a lot to share since last time, but here’s what there is…

I Just Need Some Space

I wanted to make a space-themed watercolor doodle for this year’s Father’s Day card.  I’ve tried to paint “space scenes” or “starry skies/galaxies” a couple times before, but I haven’t been happy with my results.  There are some beautiful examples online, and I think practice would help, but usually I just end up doing something else (more in my comfort zone) instead.

This time, I tried something different—a more cartoon/doodle style of a space scene.  I think it’s better than it could’ve been.

It’s mostly White Nights granulating watercolor paint, with a few touches of pearlescent watercolor… and of course black ink pen.

Dog Doodle

This next one was just something for fun—a whimsical doodle of a dog’s head poking out of a grassy, weedy meadow.  I think this kind of thing can be so enjoyable to do (and ought to do them more often)!

This was a mix of traditional watercolor (base layer), Boku-Undo e-sumi watercolor (plant details), and pens, including the flexible nib pen (Zebra Zensations).

Does This Bug You?

I was in a “let’s fill a page with blobs” mood.  It seems to happen a lot, lately.  I guess it’s just about the simplest thing you can do with paint, filling a page with random shapes.

Later on, when they’ve dried, you can doodle whatever you want on them.  I’ve done flowers, seashells, and mice.  This time, I thought I’d try beetles.

They’re a little uneven in line quality, because the pen I was using ran out of ink, and I had trouble finding another with the same thickness and darkness of line.  It was just for fun, though, so not really a problem that it’s inconsistent.

I don’t love beetles, to be honest, but at least it was something different!

Mushroom Houses Again

The “let’s fill a page with watercolor blobs” mood wasn’t satisfied with the orange, yellow, and green page, so I did this one, too.  Bigger rectangles.  When I’ve done these in the past, I ended up doodling houses on top of them, but I wanted to do something different this time.  Actually, I guess these are still houses, but they’re based on the mushroom fairy houses I blogged about in the last month or two.

This time, I kept them simpler, with less shading details.  Here they are just after doodling:

I decided to add another layer of paint to only a few areas of the mushrooms, so here they are after that:

I doubt they have nearly enough contrast.  Maybe I should try again, sometime, with the extra texture/shading.  But for something that’s just a little fun to sketch, they aren’t bad.

What a Knitwit...

(Gotta love those punny headings, right?  …Right?)

I’m still knitting away at the current “Glam Cowl”.  I’ve moved on to the second ball of yarn for this one.  (Had to look that up to remember the different options on how to switch from one ball to the next.  It’s been a while.)

The cowl will be bigger than it “needs” to be, but that’s okay.  I just want to use up this mohair yarn, and an oversized cowl in such lightweight yarn shouldn’t be a problem.  It’ll probably just feel luxurious to use.  (Or so I’m hoping.)

It’s nice to have something to knit on for a while in the evenings, when I’m watching or listening to a podcast.  Once this project is done, I need to find another easy thing I can work on.

Welcome!

I’m Michael (a female Michael, to remove any doubt).  I live on the Alabama Gulf Coast with my husband, Donald, and our crazy American Eskimo Dogs.

I love to fill my spare time with various crafts and other hobbies, and this blog is where I share photos, record my progress, and ramble endlessly.
