Monday, Moth, Meow?

3 Materials Challenge: Day 13

I had the idea that I wanted to try the white water-soluble crayon on top of the Decorating Chalk, so I just scrolled my old photos until I found an idea—a diamond painting of a luna moth.

I went for a a blue background instead of green, even though the luna moth is green… Not sure why.  Well, the white pastel/crayon didn’t really show up as much against the light blue as I’d hoped.  I think I need a darker background, so maybe I’ll try something else, like marker, next time.

Anyway, here’s today’s sketch/doodle:

Today’s materials:  Medium-pale blue Decorating Chalk, white water-soluble pastel, and a dark brown water color pencil, just because that’s what was handy.  It’s a Staedtler Karat from a set Donald brought with him when he moved from Sweden.  I couldn’t use it with water this time, because the paper can’t handle water.  But look what happened when I smudged the white crayon over the pencil:  It turned pink!  I’m not sure if it would have done that with a regular color pencil, but I doubt it.  Interesting!

Endless Art Challenge

I gave the Endless Art Challenge deck of cards another try, yesterday.

My prompts:

Animal, Blush, & Use 5 Colors or Less

Again, I just did the first thing to pop into my head.  One of the most “blush” colors in the watercolor set I used was named “ballerina pink” (or similar), and I was still in a Terry Runyan frame of mind, so pink ballerina cats it was!

I roughly paint-doodled some ballerina cats using two shades of pink/blush/peach.  Then I pulled out an Inktense pencil.  (Can’t recall if it was Mid Vermillion or Scarlet Pink…)  I added a few lines to the tutus and feet/shoes, then had another idea.  I drew simple swirls across the empty areas of the page, and after softly activating the pencil lines on the tutus, I wet each swirl of pencil and pulled out the pigment to make a simple stylized rose.

After it dried, I went back with a little dab of leftover white gouache from my palette to tone down an area for each cat’s muzzle.

And the last step was to add details with a micro-tipped black ink pen.

5 colors or less:

  1. blush pink watercolor
  2. peachy watercolor
  3. single Inktense pencil
  4. white gouache
  5. black ink pen

I clearly know nothing about ballet positions and didn’t bother to look them up—and I wish I had done one or two things differently—but on the whole, I had a lot of fun with this one.

This is pretty much exactly how I envisioned the Endless Art Challenge deck working, so I’m happy with that!

Knitting Update

Taking my time, but making progress.  It is nice to have something to knit/crochet on again!

Welcome!

I’m Michael (a female Michael, to remove any doubt).  I live on the Alabama Gulf Coast with my husband, Donald, and our crazy American Eskimo Dogs.

I love to fill my spare time with various crafts and other hobbies, and this blog is where I share photos, record my progress, and ramble endlessly.
