Catching up after not posting yesterday…
Inktober Day 14: "Trunk"
There are about three ways I could think of that you can go with a prompt like “trunk”. I went the “elephant” route.
The only problem is that I don’t draw elephants very often. It kind of got away from me, so we ended up with an elephant crossed with a wiener dog. ;o)
Inktober Day 15: "Ragged"
This dog is also a scarecrow dressed in ragged clothes.
Inner Critic: The ears are too high, which gives rabbit vibes, and you forgot to add the tail peeking out at the side. *sigh* …You even forgot to put the closing quotation marks after the prompt!
Me: Well, she’s right, but I can fix the last two things tomorrow and post the updated version in the next blog post. The rabbity ears, however, are Just the Way It Is.
Doodled Owls
I finished the page started the other day—owl shapes painted on, ready to be doodled over.
This has confirmed for me that I’m not really an owl doodler. I find myself drawing a blank about how they should look, which means they’re not as much fun as lots of other things.
Maybe I’ll give it another try, another time, but for now, I think I’m done with this topic…
I do think that drawing a single owl might be okay, on occasion. It’s the trying to make several of them that aren’t just too similar to one another that’s the problem, really.
Yet More Rows of Jack-o'-Lanterns
Remember the potted plants I doodled on the really cheapo paper? It didn’t fill the whole page, so I wanted to doodle something else to finish that off. I went for something easy—more mindless jack-o’-lantern doodles.
(I used Noodler’s Lexington Gray for this, in an EF nib fountain pen.)
When it was time to tint them with watercolor, the cheapness of the paper was very noticeable.
You don’t need expensive cotton paper to have fun with watercolor, but if the paper is too cheap, it definitely takes away from the experience and limits your ability to play.
Am I finally done with this subject? I don’t know! It’s just such an easy thing to doodle, and it’s almost always enjoyable.
…And it is October…
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Luna & Frodo
I haven’t shared photos of the dogs in a while, so it seemed like time to snap a couple of quick pix.
I took both of these photos today, in completely different settings (with completely different lighting), using my new phone. I say “new”… I got it in August, I think, but it still feels fairly new to me.
My old phone was having battery issues, and I’d already been wanting a phone with a better camera, so it was a good excuse to upgrade to something nicer.
I’m not an expert in phone photography, not by a long shot, but even so, this phone does seem to give better results than my old one did.
Late Summer/Early Autumn Garden
Yesterday and this morning, I took a few photos in the garden—mostly of bees visiting the swamp sunflowers. There are a lot of sulfur and Gulf fritillary butterflies around, too, but I found them more challenging to capture. The bees were more obliging and stayed on a single flower long enough to snap a few photos.
(The sides of the photos get chopped off if you look at this slideshow on the phone with the phone in portrait orientation. If you hold the phone for a landscape view, I think it will display correctly.)
