30 Days of Sketchbook Joy

Continuing with the on-going challenge…

Day 20: Analogous Color Palette

This prompt is one that is well within my comfort zone.  I like analogous color schemes a lot.  However, I wanted more direction, so I decided to use the prompt cards—a combination of the bought set and my handmade ones.

The color card I chose at random, but the other two were selected after flipping through the deck.

Plaid and the scene of fields sparked an idea to draw a bird’s-eye-view of a farm with plaid and other patterns to fill in the different fields.

I sketched a simple layout of rectangles in pencil, then started painting in my patterns using watercolor.  With emerald green as the starting point, I chose to keep it with greens and yellows.

After the paint was dry I added details in black ink pen, letting the picture develop as ideas presented themselves.  Starting the fences and gates, I moved on to structures, turning polka-dots into trees, and so on.

This was fun!

Day 21: Your Favorite Medium

I guess my favorite medium is watercolor, based purely on the frequency with which I use it, so that’s what I chose for this prompt.

As for the subject matter, I took an idea from a YouTube video I watched recently.  It reminded me of a book Mom read to us when I was young—The Hundred Dresses, by Eleanor Estes—and that suggested the idea of quickly sketched dresses painted in watercolor.  I then added details in ink, because really, watercolor and ink is probably my actual favorite.

And that’s that!

Welcome!

I’m Michael (a female Michael, to remove any doubt).  I live on the Alabama Gulf Coast with my husband, Donald, and our crazy American Eskimo Dogs.

I love to fill my spare time with various crafts and other hobbies, and this blog is where I share photos, record my progress, and ramble endlessly.
